Abstract: This paper is designed to describe the major climatic changes that have occurred in the Huanghuaihai Plain during the past 60 years, particularly the effects of drought on the production of two major crops grown on cropland(i.e., summer maize and winter wheat). The published literatures were reviewed using a literature research method. The Huanghuaihai Plain has witnessed an overall warming and drying trend. Grain yield has recently decreased due to increased drought severity and drought frequency, and the effects of the drought on grain output were most severe in the northern plain. Different stages of a crop’s growth were affected differently by drought. Previous research generally concentrated on examining the spatial and temporal characteristics of a single climate component in this area, as well as the influence of the climate on the production of a single grain crop. Therefore, we still don’t have a complete knowledge of how crop productivity in this region relates to climate change. Under the context of global warming, we should focus more on the mechanisms behind the effects of climate change and climatic extremes on the yield of various crops during individual growing stages in the Huanghuaihai Plain. Such a discovery is expected to offer significant scientific direction for better coping with climate change and enhancing agricultural output in China.
